🌿 Big Buddies, Little Naturalists, and a Great Outdoors!
Our Westfield Area High School AP/CAPP Biology students took their science skills out of the lab and onto the trails today for a very special collaboration!
In partnership with the Ethel Everhard Memorial Library, our high schoolers hosted this month’s StoryWalk featuring the book One Earth by Eileen Spinelli. But they didn’t do it alone—they were joined by some enthusiastic junior scientists from Westfield Elementary!
📖 Reading & Roaming
The high school "Big Buddies" paired up with our kindergartners to walk the community trail, reading the pages of One Earth as they went. It was a wonderful way to connect literacy with environmental stewardship.
🔍 Scavenger Hunt Fun
After finishing the story, the learning continued! The groups headed further down the trail to complete a nature scavenger hunt. From identifying local flora to spotting signs of wildlife, our AP students got to share their biology expertise while the kindergartners practiced their observation skills. #Pioneers

Our Westfield High School Science Club took an unforgettable trip to the UW-Platteville STEM Expo, a massive science fair-style event where college students and faculty open their labs and classrooms to high schoolers. With over 50 hands-on exhibits, it’s designed to give students a deep dive into the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through interactive demonstrations and professional-level equipment.
Our Pioneers didn't just watch—they dove right in! Here were the highlights:
🥼 The Cadaver Lab
In a rare and fascinating opportunity, students stepped inside the anatomy labs to see the complexities of the human body firsthand. It was a powerful experience that bridged the gap between biology textbooks and real-world medical science.
🔊 The Science of Sound
The sound station was a huge hit—especially for our vocalists! While experimenting with frequency and resonance, our students got to see their own voices visualized as digital waves. The expo staff even gave them the ultimate science compliment, telling one of our choir students they had "nice waves!" 🎤
Whether they were exploring human anatomy or the physics of a melody, our students showed that STEM is everywhere. We are so proud of their curiosity and their "perfect pitch" representation of Westfield! #Pioneers

🌍 Happy Earth Week from the WAHS Science Club! 🌿
We’ve had an incredible week celebrating our planet. It was all about taking action and appreciating the world around us. Here’s a look at what we got up to:
📖 Community Story Walk
We were so proud to partner with the Ethel Everhard Memorial Library to sponsor the April Community Story Walk! This month’s featured book is One Earth by Eileen Spinelli. If you haven’t seen it yet, head over to the story walk on the community trail at Pioneer Park to enjoy a great story while getting some fresh air!
🖍️ Chalk the Walk
We took to the pavement to spread some eco-optimism! Science Club members spent the afternoon decorating the sidewalks with Earth Day facts and reminders to keep our community green.
🧘 Earth Day Yoga Fundraiser
A huge thank you to everyone who joined our Earth Day Yoga session! We raised funds to support our future club projects while practicing our "tree pose" (very fitting, we think). 🌳
📱 The Great Lakes Bioblitz
Science meets tech! We participated in the Great Lakes Bioblitz, a massive citizen science project. Using the iNaturalist app, we documented local plants and wildlife to help scientists track biodiversity in our region. 🔍🦋
Thank you to everyone in Westfield who supported our events this week! Let’s keep that Earth Day energy going all year long. 🌎✨

The 8th-grade science classes were fortunate to have Bill Harris visit and share his energy presentation for several days in April.
They enjoyed riding a bicycle that powered a variety of different kinds of bulbs to see how much energy was needed to power each type; trying to light a large block of coal using energy from the sun; learning about how wind turbines can use wind to produce electrical energy. #Pioneers

The Middle School Student Council visited Lily Meadows in April and made Easter Crafts and played Easter-themed games.
Many of the boys enjoyed playing a dice game, even though they lost. The Easter craft was to make an Easter bunny or chick.
The highlight of the trip was playing balloon beach volleyball. #Pioneers

On Wednesday, April 1st, Westfield Area High School Math Students attended the Milwaukee Brewers game versus the Tampa Bay Rays for math day. Prior to the game, the 45 students were taught several different math concepts and how they related to the game of baseball. While at American Family Field, the students kept track of multiple game statistics and used them to make predictions about the outcome of the game. Students had a wonderful time applying classroom skills to a real life scenario, and cheering on the Brewers! #Pioneers

The Middle School Student Council visited Lilly Meadows in February and tried to forget about the cold weather outside with a winter luau inside! They built “sandcastles” out of Play Dough, then played beach volleyball. In March they prepared for St. Patrick’s Day by playing “Whack a Leprechaun” followed by their new favorite activity beach volleyball. #Pioneers

Seventh grade students in Mrs. Showen's ELA class constructed totem poles and wrote essays about them for a culminating project after reading, Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen. Students used their creativity and imaginations while thinking about symbols that represented important things or people in their lives. #Pioneers

Westfield Area Seventh Graders had the honor of welcoming Mike Decorah into their ELA classroom earlier this month. They did a novel study on Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen which had many ties to Native American culture. Mike graciously volunteered his time to come into Mrs. Showen's classroom to do a presentation on his Native American Culture. He talked about his upbringing, some Native traditions, and the importance of dance. The students learned so much and appreciated the information. #Pioneers

Biology students participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count, an international citizen science effort conducted for four days each February through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada. Students reported their bird-watching observations to the eBird database, which will help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. #Pioneers

To help celebrate random acts of kindness, starting today the high school will have a class competition to see what class can bring in the most items to be donated to the Feline/Canine Animal Shelter. They are in need of cat and kitten food, cat treats, liquid laundry soap, paper towels, garbage bags, disinfecting wipes, dish soap and cat toys. The winning class will earn a prize based on the number of items brought in.
Also the WAHS Student Council has organized dress up days for this week as well. #Pioneers

This past week the students in Culinary Arts 2 completed their State ServSafe food handler certification. This is the first class at Westfield Area High School to have the opportunity to work through the program. This program supports food safety and sanitation giving these students a higher skill set and advantage for opportunities in the culinary job market. Congratulations to Senior Raya Ferraro for being the first in the class. #Pioneers

Before leaving for Christmas break the world’s food class had a special presenter from the community visit. Norberto Morales from the local Mexican restaurant Los Tomates came in to talk about his journey from Mexico to the US. He talked about how he started out in the restaurant world. He helped teach the students how to prep and prepare Al Pastor Tacos (pork tacos) and salsa that they prepare in the restaurant. Learning to cut ingredients and preparing them was enlightening and students enjoyed learning. This finished off the world’s foods studies of the countries of the western hemisphere. A big thank you to Norberto and Los Tomates for ending our unit in style. #Pioneers
