On the evening of November 5, as I waited for the results of the School District of Westfield facility referendum, I found myself reflecting on what the outcome might reveal. Would our school community see the vision we had shared? Would they trust us to steward their investment for the future of our schools and students? I had no idea what the community would decide, but I felt hopeful, knowing how much had gone into this effort. When the final numbers came in, I was thrilled to see that the answer was a resounding “yes.”
At that moment, the gratitude I felt was overwhelming—not just for the referendum’s success, but for the immense support we had received along the way. This approval represents more than funding; it speaks to a shared commitment between our schools and our school community. It’s a clear message that our residents believe in the value of safe, functional, and inspiring learning environments for our students, and it reaffirms the trust placed in us to make this vision a reality.
As we settle into November and the season of gratitude, I find myself looking back on my own journey in education. Twenty-five years ago, I was a middle school science teacher, stepping into my classroom for the first time, eager to make a difference. At that time, I didn’t fully understand the depth of what this profession would ask of me, nor the profound rewards it would offer. Now, as I see our school community’s support for this referendum, I am reminded of the privilege it is to serve not only our students but also the larger community that believes in them.
Education is more than just teaching subjects; it’s a commitment to shaping the future. Every day, we work to create a safe, inclusive environment where students feel valued and respected. We teach not only academic skills but also compassion, empathy, and resilience. Through academics, arts, sports, and service opportunities, students learn to persevere, commit, and take pride in their accomplishments. And with this referendum approval, we can continue to offer these essential experiences in facilities that truly support their growth.
This referendum outcome is a celebration of what we, as a school community, can accomplish together. To every business, stakeholder, and resident who helped us communicate this need and ultimately made this vision possible, THANK YOU. Your support enables us to address critical needs in our district, and your belief in our mission strengthens our resolve to serve our students with excellence.
As we move forward with this work, I want you to know that your trust and commitment inspire us every day. This success is not just a victory for the district; it’s a victory for our entire school community, for the families who call our rural communities home, and for the future we are building together.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. Together, we are making a lasting difference.
Respectfully,
Michelle Johnson
