Dear Pioneer Families, As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a time when many of us gather to share delicious meals, enjoy games, watch football, or prepare for the holiday season. Most importantly, it’s a chance to come together with friends and family to reflect upon and celebrate all we are thankful for in our lives. In the spirit of gratitude, we also encourage everyone to join us for the annual Bowls for Hunger event on Monday, December 2nd, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at the Westfield Area High School Cafeteria. This event is a wonderful way to give back to our community while enjoying a delicious soup supper created by local dining establishments. For just $10 per ticket, you’ll receive a beautiful handmade stoneware bowl and supper, with the option to dine in or carry out. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from Westfield Area High School students. We also welcome attendees to donate non-perishable food items to help support those in need. Finally, I’d like to highlight a few reflections of gratitude shared by some of our students. Their thoughtful responses capture the spirit of thankfulness and serve as a wonderful reminder of the many things we have to celebrate in our school community. Here are their reflections, shared in a "summarized" Top Ten format to bring some holiday cheer! 10. “I’m grateful for the lunch program—and for the counselors who always give me food because I’m always hungry!” 9. “Explore classes like Arts, Tech Ed, and Foods give us a chance to try new hobbies and figure out what we love.” 8. “The athletic opportunities here are amazing—and so are the coaches who push us to do our best.” 7.“The training I got to become a firefighter shows how Westfield schools help us pursue our dreams and make them a reality!” 6. “I’m thankful for staff like Mrs. Locke, who helped me discover my passion for reading, and Mrs. Hoffa, who helps us catch up when we fall behind.” 5. I’m grateful for an education that teaches me it’s okay to think differently from my classmates. With so many voices in the classroom, I’ve learned to see things from different perspectives—and that’s just as important as the life skills like leadership, communication, and organization our teachers share with us.” 4. “Our incredible music programs and talented teachers inspire us to grow as musicians and people. Whether it’s Ms. Trewin helping me through tough times, or Mrs. Mades, Mr. Greve, and Dr. Steward encouraging us. They’ve shaped my life in ways I’ll always remember.” 3. “The relationships I’ve built with friends, teachers, and staff are something I’ll always treasure. They’ve given me strength, opportunities, and unforgettable experiences.” 2. “I’m thankful for the teachers who truly care, like Mrs. Alcorta and Ms. Trewin, who helped me through the hardest times in my life and gave me the courage to keep going.” And the number one thing we’re grateful for in our high school education… 1. “Public education here has taught me leadership, communication, and organizational skills—life lessons that will stick with me forever.” A huge thank you to our high school students for sharing their gratitude and reminding us why our schools are so important. Happy Thanksgiving! Your support makes all the difference. Warm Regards, Michelle Johnson District Administrator

The 4th grade class at Coloma Elementary School visited the school forest a few weeks ago to explore the beautiful woods and create “burrows” for the two main characters in their class read aloud Violet and Jobie: In the Wild. They did a great job using the steps of the engineering design process to plan and build their burrows for their mouse characters. They can’t wait to go back to the school forest again soon! #Pioneers

4th grade students in Mrs. Francis's class use Play-doh to make figures that express the meanings of their weekly vocabulary words. This allows students to use creative ways to demonstrate their understanding of new vocabulary words. It also helps students them retain the information they learn.

On Tuesday, November 5th, fourth grade students at Westfield Elementary School took part in a mock election. Throughout the process, students learned why it was both a responsibility and a right to be able to vote as well as understanding who was eligible to vote. Students then used the results to make graphs comparing those results to each of the three classrooms that participated. #Pioneers
